Dirt Roads to Dreams ~ Stephanies Luxury Spas Turns 25

It takes something special for a business to keep its doors open for multiple decades! This month, as Stephanies Luxury Spas celebrates 25 devoted years of being in business, we take a look at some of the specialness that has made this Company such a success.

25th Birthday Spa Blog

In chatting with Joyce Shepherd, Stephanie’s Mum, we discovered insights to the early years of Founder and CEO of Stephanies Luxury Spas.

Like all Mums, Joyce wanted the very best for Stephanie however, living in Broken Hill in the 60s and 70s, surrounded by dirt roads, she found the isolation challenging. “I worried Stephanie wouldn’t be able to achieve her dreams”, said Joyce.

The Shepherd family faced all challenges with a lot of patience, love and support and raised a successful, independent and free-thinking daughter.

Even before starting school, Stephanie wanted to be a ‘Beauty Lady’. With very little money, Joyce’s make-up kit consisted of a face cream, foundation and one Avon lipstick, when the lippy ran out it was time to save up to purchase another.

Setting good examples and a strict upbringing, Joyce’s bedroom was off limits, however, after Kindy pick up, the relentless ‘Beauty Lady’, at the age of 5, would come out of Mums room smelling like Avon and painted up like a circus clown!

milestone

While Joyce and Len were able to encourage Brother Greg to do his school work, Stephanie was focused and had beauty on her mind – not homework! A childhood comment from our CEO was ‘I don’t need to study to be a Beauty Lady’!

Stephanie with her best friend Natalie Dunstan throughout primary school spent many hours doing hairdos and creative makeup applications from the age of 6. A lifelong friendship like no other was established – today Natalie is Stephanie’s right-hand lady, an integral part of Stephanies Luxury Spas.

Being too young to go to ‘Beauty School’, Joyce and Len gave young Stephanie the opportunity to complete a secretarial course with the ‘carrot’ – do well, pass the course and you will go to Beauty School! Naturally, Stephanie blitzed the course and was on her way to making her dream a reality. In 1985 Stephanie attended Heather Langton’s Academy of Beauty Therapy in Adelaide, South Australia.

milestone

Once qualified, the ecstatic Beauty Therapist Stephanie started working at Hair and Beauty Talk in Broken Hill where her love of Payot Skincare products was born. While Stephanie was a fresh-faced beauty therapist to the industry, and with her mum being a TAFE teacher, Stephanie wanted to help other girls in the Broken Hill community, so she planned and implemented a Teenage Beauty Course during school holidays which gave her some amazing confidence at such a young age, and was a huge success.

In learning about Stephanies early years, it’s no wonder her business is celebrating 25 years! Many people are too afraid to follow their dreams and do what they love – from the dirt roads of Broken Hill; the dreams of a young girl to become a ‘Beauty Lady’ have overwhelmingly become a reality.

First Day Spa Visit, Guest Review

Yael’s day spa experience is not uncommon. We loved hearing about her time at our Urban Spa in Bulimba. Here is what she had to say:

I received a gift voucher nearly a year ago and I have been hesitant to use it as I rarely use a beauty salon.

After looking through the services and discussing your salon with a few friends I decided to go for a facial.  This was my very first facial and to tell you the truth I was very nervous and anxious.
I rang and talked to a lovely lady and she went through all the various facials and together we choose the right one for me.

On arrival on Thursday 27th June, I was greeted by a lovely lady at the desk and felt a bit more at ease. She explained to me that the therapist that she has for me was very experienced and she will talk me through the procedure.

The procedure went so well the therapist was very helpful and professional. She made me feel so relaxed and welcomed.

I really want to thank the ladies at the salon and thank you for making my very first experience so special and great. When I had finished the ladies showed me some products I could get and there was absolutely no pressure to buy. But with 25 per cent off I couldn’t resist.

Thank you, thank you, so much I will be back and will recommend your salon to all my friends.

Very good, service is very professional and extremely welcoming.”
Thanks, Yael for taking the time to tell us about your first Day Spa experience. It really means a lot to us and we are extremely pleased your time with us was reassuring and relaxing.
Emma Senior Spa Therapist
We look forward to welcoming you soon.  It’s important to acknowledge Emma M our Senior Therapist for her professional, personal care and therapy.
Victoria our Bulimba Spa Manager for assisting and helping Yael feel comfortable and welcome.

25 Years in Business Celebrations

My Mum Joyce Has Influenced & Guided My Career

It takes something special for a business to keep its doors open for multiple decades! This week, as Stephanies Luxury Spas celebrates 25 devoted years of being in business, we take a look at some of the specialness that has made this Company such a success.

25th Birthday Spa Blog

I am an entrepreneur, and that means I look at the impossible and think I can do it. But I’m astute enough to know I can’t do it on my own. The idea that anyone can do it on their own is self-indulgent and untrue.

Through the years, I’ve had hundreds of employees that have worked here making Stephanies what it is today. This clearly shows that we’ve all contributed to the building of this Company, piece by piece, year by year, until it stands before you now – 25 years strong – a beautiful, caring organisation made from the efforts of good people working toward a common purpose to care for, and delight our guests.

To kick off our 25th Birthday blogs, and with Mother’s Day just passed, I really want to acknowledge my Mother, Joyce, who has influenced and guided my career, my life, like no other. Before I share the life values my parents instilled in me, I’d like to celebrate just a snippet of Mum’s life.

Growing up in the isolation of Broken Hill, my Mum wanted to be an Air Hostess and needed to do nursing however her parents wouldn’t allow that, so her determination and drive saw her do a St. Johns ‘home nursing’ course, a male orientated course for the town miners. During the course, Mum met the instructor Len, fell in love, married shortly after and their amazing 50 year journey began. My parents were trailblazers; they did things that were unheard of then. On a holiday to Coolangatta, they spent a couple of days in Sydney where they were to buy furniture, instead they bought two tickets to South Africa which ended up being a three year working holiday and cementing their love of travel.

Back in Broken Hill with a young family, Mum tackled all challenges head on, illnesses, changing times and the realisation that if anything happened to the household income, she wouldn’t be able to support the kids. So, she studied, succeeded and began her teaching career at night school. Totally dedicated – mum raised a family, managed a household, worked fulltime at night, studied and achieved a degree, adored her husband and ensured I knew my times tables!

My Mother taught me early on how to work hard, have exemplary work ethics – if you want for something, you work for it. She inspired me to fight and to reach for the sky, but most importantly she inspired me to work tirelessly and never give up! Life values of trust, loyalty, respect, truth and determination have been ingrained into my life and as I reflect on 25 years in business, I am absolutely positive, and thankful, my business successes stem from Mum’s influences, guidance and values.

Passion, resilience and goodwill. Mum always showed passion and drive in any project she took on, big or small. Having a strong, driven, multi-talented woman by my side has shaped me in so many ways and I am so grateful.

My Mum is a genuinely kind human being. She’s always there for me when I need a listening ear or sound advice when it comes to my personal life or professional career. It could be 5am and she’s ready to listen. She pushes me to succeed, elevates me to reach my goals and paints a vivid and tangible picture of success in my mind.

I have been, and continue to be very blessed to have had the counsel and direction from this inspirational woman I am so proud to call Mum.
